Eric
Clapton & Steve Winwood, Xcel Energy Center (8pm) >> Eric Clapton's song "Layla" is a classic rock song from one of the classic rockers. One of the coolest parts of the song is the transition into the cool-down part of the song. At a recent concert, Clapton's arrangement separates the 2 parts with a 5 second pause, as if it's 2 separate songs. Odd. Original Layla (3:10) vs. slower Layla (3:34). Dakota
Code Talkers & Native
Words, Native Warriors, Minnesota History Center >> Native American languages were used during WWI & WWII as frontline code talkers. During WWI, Choctaw was first used in October 1918, leading to Comanche, Cheyenne, Cherokee, Osage and Yankton code talkers. The irony was that back in the U.S., government policy prohibited the use of native languages. During WWII, Navajo Marines were standard communicators, while the Army used Assiniboine, Cherokee, Chippewa, Choctaw Kiowa, Comanche, Dakota, Hopi, Lakota, Menominee, Muscogee Creek, Oneida, Pawnee, Seminole, and Meskwaki (Iowa) soldiers for communications. (Frank Sanache, last of the Meskwaki code talkers, died in Aug 2004.) Some code talkers also served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. On June 23rd, the MN History Center will celebrate the Dakota Code Talkers (5-8pm). Pink Martini, O'Shaughnessy, St. Paul (7:30pm) |
