The
sky was clear with small puffball clouds hovering at the horizon, as if
in a ring of cloud-bleachers surrounding Lake Calhoun. Temperatures
leaned around the mid 80s. My temperature was closer to 99.7. That's
always my temperature. I could take my temperature now or next winter,
and it would still be 99.7. I'm always hot. One time when I was a baby,
I was so hot that I slept in the refrigerator. I woke up with those
little broccoli buds all over my head.
Where was
I? Oh yeah, the Aquatennial. There were plenty of people there... and
dogs. Some watched the milk carton boat races. Some lapped at the lake
-- the dogs. Some watched the sand castle building contest. And some
watched beach volleyball. What I couldn't find was milk. I guess they
used it all up for the boats.

The
red-fish Amanda
Jean swims smoothly across the glassy surface
of Lake Calhoun -- half-full of creative milk carton boats -- as
the blue Minneapolis skyline watches and reflects. Mmmm, fillet of
red-fish...
