TIL Bees Are Fed With High-Fructose Corn Syrup
April 30, 2013
Picture
bees in the hive. Buzzing away. Some beekeeper comes along and takes
big chunks of honeycombed honey from their honeycomb hideout. The
beekeeper substitutes the honey for a slop of high-fructose corn syrup.
Do you think the bees noticed?
We've secretly replaced
the fine coffee they usually serve with Folgers Crystals. Let's see if
anyone can tell the difference.
Researchers
have noticed the worldwide collapse of honeybee colonies (Colony
Collapse Disorder) and are wondering if the high-fructose
corn syrup is the problem.
Hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmm. Do ya think?
Honey is shelf stable. High-fructose corn
syrup is not. Chemically they are similar except that honey has pollen
and high-fructose
corn syrup does not. And it's the pollen in honey that has antioxidants,
enzymes, and other health benefits.
Some companies filter out the pollen from their honey. Why
would they
do that?
Pollen tells where the honey comes from. China has been found to add
illegal antibiotics and dilute the honey with high-fructose
corn syrup. (The antibiotics preserve the corn syrup.)
In
one instance 11 years ago, contaminated Chinese honey was shipped to
Canada and then on to a warehouse in Houston where it was sold to jelly
maker J.M. Smuckers and the national baker Sara Lee. By the time the
FDA said it realized the Chinese honey was tainted, Smuckers had sold
12,040 cases of individually packed honey to Ritz-Carlton Hotels and
Sara Lee said it may have been used in a half-million loaves of bread
that were on store shelves.
The honey you've been eating probably isn't honey, according to this
study. Yes, even the honey in the plastic bears.

The European
Union has banned the nerve-agent pesticides
blamed for the dramatic decline global bee populations. The
moratorium restricts the use of imidacloprid and clothianidin,
made by Germany's Bayer, and thiamethoxam, made by the Swiss company,
Syngenta. The ban on use on flowering crops will remain in place
throughout the EU for two years unless compelling scientific evidence
to the contrary becomes available.

Dr. Shlomo and the G.I. Clinic
April 25, 2013
Everyone agrees the early music of Dr.
Shlomo and the G.I. Clinic (when they were Dr. Shlomo and The Infantry)
was far better than their latest Don't
Rock the Bedpan.
Should we be upset or relieved that the CD only has eight songs?!?
Gang Green, the first song, starts with what sounds like hands slamming
down on a table -- a loud thumping. Dr. Shlomo sings:
Record companies are knocking
The record companies
are pounding
They want a contract
They want to talk money
The record companies
are calling
How'd they get this
number?
Jimmy says, They want
their money back
They want their
contract back
Gang Green -- the money
people -- Gang Green...
Compact disks are supposed to last 30 or 50 years, depending on if
they're left in the sun or not. Don't
Rock the Bedpan is
one CD for the sunshine. I'd
rather listen to anything by Shorty Jizzle before any more of Dr.
Shlomo and the G.I. Clinic. It's like nothing you've ever heard before.

Minnesota's Second Winter
April 19, 2013
I'm an optimist. Put me next to the most optimistic person you know,
and I'll make them seem dismal and gloomy.
And yet this winter... are
we still on the first winter of the year or have we already moved on to
the second? ...has been wearing on me.
Yes, it looks beautiful. Inches of snow finely balanced on the thinnest
of twigs. Yes, it's very pretty. Now back to the shoveling.
This is the sort of adversity... beautiful adversity no less... that
causes me to call in the optimism
reinforcements...
... dogs.

Sarah Morris - Grateful Moon
April 17, 2013
Recently I enjoyed a performance by local singer-songwriter Sarah Morris.
She has a charming style of boldly singing
while sometimes hiding behind her guitar.
Her covers to songs makes you do a hearing double-take. “Is that what she
sang? Yeah, that's what I thought she sang.” She
makes other artist's songs her own, in a thoughtful way.
While she was on a break, I bought a CD from her. She has two. Grateful Moon
is a collection of covers, with a jazz influence. Lonely Or Free
is her original work, with more of a country style. Because of liking
her take on other's songs, I bought Grateful Moon, even
though I wanted to hear original work as well.
Her gutsy rendition of Irving Berlin's Cheek To Cheek was
worth the price of the CD. I also liked her jazzier take on the Whitney
Houston hit, I Wanna
Dance With Somebody.
I'll buy Lonely
Or Free next time.
